What is the difference between Dysport and Botox? My staff and clients know I consider botulinum toxin injections a staple in maintaining a youthful appearance. It has a very low risk of complications when injected by an experienced injector, no downtime and it absolutely works. It improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily causing a muscle paralysis where it is injected. I use it myself and recommend it to everyone as a starting point in the fight against aging.
What is the difference between Dysport and Botox?
This is a question I frequently get asked. Both are just different brand names of botulinum toxins. The short answer the question is, very little. I have several clients who claim one lasts longer than the other or has a quicker onset of action. Some clients who claim they swell more with one or the other. I accommodate these clients with what they want. However, I have injected thousands of units of botulinum toxin and I cannot honestly say, I have ever seen a huge difference in their effect or side effects.
The company that makes Dysport claims their toxin is cheaper but you need about 3 units of Dysport for every one unit of Botox. For example, if I inject 20units of Botox between a person’s eyebrows (a pretty normal starting dose in that area) then I have to inject between 50 and 60units of Dysport to get the same effect.
There have also been claims Dysport has a quicker onset of action by a day.
We recently did an in-office experiment and injected one of our team members with Botox on half of her face and Dysport on the other half. There was no difference in the onset of action or how long one lasted compared to the other.
Finally, I would say more important than the brand of botulinum toxin is the injector.
Choose wisely when deciding who injects your toxin (or fillers for that matter) because they are not all created equal. This may surprise you, but just because a person is a plastic surgeon or dermatologist does not mean they are good at injecting. Physicians definitely have the best training in anatomy and medicine, but if they have not been injecting for very long then they may not deliver the best results or avoid undesirable complications. Choose someone who has been injecting for a long period of time and was recommended by a friend who has been using botulinum toxin for a long period of time. At Flower Mound Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Spa, I do all of the injecting and have a loyal following of clients. If you have been considering using Botox (or Dysport), then give us a call. I would love to meet and discuss with you.
