You’re excited that your neck lift procedure is over and that it went off without a hitch. It’s something that you’ve wanted to address for many years, and now that it’s done, you can’t wait for the results to really show themselves. But in the meantime, you can’t help but wonder, “How do I sleep after a procedure like this?”
We don’t blame you for asking. Sleep is an important piece to the healing and recovery process, and we’re sure your plastic surgeon mentioned it a few dozen times and even circled it on the list of post-surgery instructions.
But sometimes, sleep is a little easier said than done—especially after a neck lift.
Follow These Tips for Better Sleep After a Neck Lift
1. Sleep with your head elevated
Head elevation helps reduce swelling and limits unnecessary pressure on your neck as you heal. That said, this will take a little bit of trial and error to find the position that works best for your pain tolerance and overall comfort. Prop extra pillows up behind your head. Wedge pillows are also a wonderfully effective option. Some patients find it helpful to sleep in a recliner to maintain proper positioning without strain.
2. Sleep on your back
This tactic is strongly recommended during early recovery, as side or stomach sleeping places too much pressure on your neck. Place pillows along both sides of your body to prevent rolling over in your sleep. This creates a supportive barrier and helps keep you comfortably positioned while you sleep.
3. Create a comfortable sleep environment
This is a great approach for sleep in general, as your body heals best when you’re relaxed. Soft, supportive pillows and breathable bedding help most patients we see stay comfortable throughout the night. Another tip is to keep the room cool and dark to encourage deeper sleep. You may also want to keep tissues, lip balm, water, and any prescribed medications nearby.
The best tip we can give you is to be patient and find a position that works for you. The bottom line is that you should never avoid sleep. A good night’s sleep supports healing, reduces swelling, and helps your body recover. By following these tips and your surgeon’s personalized instructions, you can rest comfortably while protecting your results.
