Skin Cancer Surgery and Mohs Reconstruction

Do you have a spot on your skin you are concerned may be cancer? With the understanding 80% of skin cancers occur in the head and neck area, you should trust your skin cancer care to someone who understands the anatomy in this region. Dr. Sanderson’s feels skin cancer is best managed in most instances as a team approach working closely with local dermatologists. If the lesion is in a cosmetically sensitive area Dr. Sanderson may refer you to a Mohs surgeon to remove the lesion. Mohs surgery involves excising a skin cancer followed immediately by a careful microscopic examination of the margins of the specimen. If any cancer is identified another small sliver of a margin is removed and again, immediately examined. This is the best way to remove a cancer taking only the tissue involved with cancer and nothing more.

Dr. Sanderson is an expert at reconstructing the defects left by Mohs excisions and makes every effort to do so in an expeditious manner so every patient can get on with their lives. Dr. Sanderson’s training in head and neck surgery as well as plastic surgery gives him the special expertise to manage skin malignancies in the head, face and neck as well as in other parts of the body.
